Normally, you place loudspeakers well away from walls in order to obtain an acceptable frequency response. It has become a kind of "rule of thumb" or "reference" position in the hifi world. Due to a loudspeakers omni directional dispersion pattern in the lower frequency range this "reference" position happens to give you the worst possible impulse response. This is due to all the reflections arriving at the listening position later than the direct sound and thus smearing the time domain. The result is a severe lack of attack and precision which, unfortunately, has been accepted as the best compromise in a stereo system, until Lyngdorf came around...
Lyngdorf separates the woofers from the midrange/tweeter sections into two separate BassDirect speakers that are placed along the front wall – or in the front corners – of your listening room.
The advantages are evident:
- The problem of varying sound pressure areas (peaks and dips) in the listening room is cancelled or at least seriously reduced.
- Impulse response at low frequencies is improved because the direct signal and reflections reach the listener at the same time.
- Much less energy is required for bass reproduction because the walls and the floor guide the moving air in the same direction – towards the listening position. This is also why placing speakers in this position normally gives too much bass.
- With the Lyngdorf signal processing the bass level and delay from the wall or corner-placed BassDirect speakers can be aligned exactly to match the main speakers.
The overall effect is a dramatic improvement in both frequency and impulse response.
